Multiple accidents reported due to slick roads

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The snow-less winter in central North Carolina has come to an end and slick spots on area roads turned out to be big problems for commuters Monday morning.

Emergency crews across the Triangle responded to several accidents including a three-car wreck on I-440 eastbound at Hillsborough Street in Raleigh; a multi-vehicle wreck on I-540 and Creedmoor; a vehicle fire on I-540 and I-40; and another multi-vehicle crash on Wade Ave. and Edwards Mill Rd.

In Durham, crews were also busy responding accidents. One major accident was an overturned vehicle at I-40 and Miami Boulevard.

Crews also responded to an overturned car at Durham Freeway and Cornwallis Road. The driver suffered minor neck injuries and was transported to the hospital. All lanes are back open.

The NC Highway Patrol says since the early morning hours of Monday, their department investigated the following number of accidents:

  • Wake Co.: 27 collisions
  • Durham Co.: 9 collisions
  • Granville Co.: 8 collisions
  • Person Co.: 57 collisions

The Highway Patrol adds that there were no life threatening injuries involved in any of the accidents. These numbers do not reflect any accidents that were investigated by local officials.

Several school districts across the viewing area either delayed classes by two hours or cancelled school altogether Monday morning due to possible poor driving conditions on area roads.

As temperatures start out Monday morning around freezing, icy spots have been a concern.  The sun should have everyplace above freezing after 9 a.m.  Sunny skies this afternoon will allow temperatures to reach near 50.  The sun will also dry out the roads, so even though temperatures are expected to drop into the upper 20s by Tuesday morning, black ice is not expected to be a problem.

The official snowfall at RDU was 0.9".  The average for a season over the last 30 years is 5.9" of snow. The last winter central North Carolina had no snow was in 2005-2006.
