Thousands of people took the streets of Raleigh Saturday to get their hands on dozens of doughnuts. The “Krispy Kreme Challenge” is a fundraiser for the North Carolina Children’s Hospital.
About 7,700 ran or walked in the race. The goal is to run 2.5 miles from the bell tower at N.C. State to the Krispy Kreme store on Peace Street. Once there, racers were challenged to eat a dozen doughnuts and run back to the tower.
In 2011, the race raised $122,000 for the hospital. This year the Krispy Kreme Challenge announced a $100,000 donation.
“Everybody should do this. It’s for a great cause. It’s amazing,” said Dave Thomas, a runner.
In order to make the process easier, some people condensed their doughnuts.
Thomas smashed his with his hands. Matt Horton put five doughnuts in a plastic bag and stepped on it.
“I needed a way to get more doughnuts in my stomach quicker, so I got this bag, patent pending,” Horton said.
Many of the participants wore costumes, including Thomas, who was dressed as a whoopee cushion.
“You see all these people out here in costumes. It just makes it so much more fun. Everybody loves the costumes and who doesn’t like a whoopee cushion, you know what I mean,” he said.
Jackie “Sprinkles” Wong and her friends were what they ate. They came dressed as doughnuts.
“I think they’re going to get more secured as we run the race and we eat our dozen doughnuts. They’ll fit more nicely,” she said.
This was the eighth annual race. According to organizers, everyone together ate a total of a half ton of doughnuts.
