Apex mayor Keith Weatherly said Wednesday that he was “thrilled” to hear Humie Olive Road had been selected for a new high school in Wake County.

The Wake County Public School System board voted Tuesday to approve Superintendent Tony Tata’s construction plan, which included the new school in Apex.

"Our kids who are currently driving out of town to school will have a closer alternative, right here at home,” Weatherly said in a statement. “I certainly commend Chairman [Ron] Margiotta and the school board for their leadership in bringing this much-needed facility to Apex and western Wake County.  Most of our current high schools in Wake County are over capacity and I appreciate the board's willingness to meet the needs of our students in the future."

The 112-acre site, with an estimated construction cost of $59 million, is currently in the preliminary design phase.  It is anticipated to open for the 2015 school year. The school will hold up to 2,200 students.

Margiotta, the school board chairman who is up for re-election, said the new school will reduce overcrowding in Apex High and Holly Springs High.

Tata will join Margiotta and Weatherly Thursday  at 2 p.m. in Apex Town Hall to start a series of public meetings to discuss the facilities plan.
