Firefighters rushing to a house fire in Orange County near Chapel Hill Sunday afternoon reported seeing flames coming from the roof.

By 6:15 p.m. emergency dispatchers said the fire was out.  They went to the scene at about 4 p.m., after a neighbor walking by reported seeing the fire.

Mark Rigsby, Deputy Chief, of the North Chatham Fire Department, said,  "The fire of course already got a pretty good jump on us by no one being home and a passer-by seeing it through the roof. It had to be some burn time there before we discovered it."

Officials say the fire was at 124 Hunters Ridge Road near Turnage Ridge Road southeast of Chapel Hill.

County property records list the owner as Vytas Bankaitis, chair of the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology at the UNC School of Medicine.

There were no injuries.

About 35 firefighters from several departments worked to put out and investigate the fire.
