Alexander “Skip” Wade and Phillip Johnson were friends for years, and loved to play pool, says relatives of the two men killed in an apparent robbery Wednesday.
Kaye Grady, Wade’s sister, said they even wound up going to Las Vegas to shoot pool.
"As a matter of fact, they were like days from going back," she said.
Instead, there is an investigation into their murders.
Johnson ran “Week In Treasures” in Cedar Grove, a place to buy, sell and trade. And for those two friends, it was a place to hang out.
Wade walked to the store Wednesday afternoon, and his wife came to pick him up.
"She went out and she blew twice for him. He didn't come out. So, she went in and found both of them," Grady said.
Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene. Wade later died at Duke Medical Center.
"I know she said it's a sight she will never forget," Grady said.
Sheriff’s deputies have spent the day stopping cars near the store asking if anybody knows anything about what might have happened. Investigators are calling this a robbery/homicide.
Wade's family said a cash drawer was taken from the business, but the sheriff’s office would not confirm that.
“It's a country store. He probably didn't have that much money,” Grady said. “To rob and kill two people for that. It's just... His day will come."
Wade’s family said he retired as a detective from the sheriff’s office. Now his former agency is trying to find his killer.
"I would just ask everybody's prayers,” Grady said. “I just ask for everybody's prayers and help us get through this and if anybody knows anything, please come forward. Please come forward."
A major with the sheriff’s office said they don’t have any suspects yet.
Neighbors said another murder happened at the location in 2004. It was a different store and different ownership.
