The N.C Department of Transportation is permanently closing the third lane of I-40 at the Clayton Bypass on Wednesday.
The 11-mile bypass was a $123 million project meant to help ease congestion, but it did just the opposite.
The DOT contends that the third lane was not a total waste of money.
"In a few years, we are going to widen 70 to Johnston County," said Steve Abbott of the DOT. "Since we are already there we built that lane, so when that project comes in in a few years there's a lane already built."
The lane closure was delayed over the weekend due to the rain. Closures will take place from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Wednesday while crews lay down a solid line and remove the barrels. Doing so will cost around $25,000.
