A broken water pipe in the North Carolina State Board of Elections offices has caused an evacuation and forced employees to find dry ground to accept paperwork for candidates in this year's elections.

State elections director Gary Bartlett said the Raleigh Fire Department told workers to leave their new offices Tuesday morning after concerns the flooding in some offices could cause electrical problems. Bartlett says Progress Energy will have to give the all clear before workers can return.

The evacuation has not stopped officials from accepting candidate filings. Officials moved across the street to the board's old building and set up a table and chairs. Bartlett said he accepted one filing from 11th Congressional District hopeful Chris Petrella in the parking lot.

Candidate filing ends next week.
