Recent reports show some people are using their government benefits in strip clubs, liquor stores and casinos.
The House last week overwhelmingly passed legislation that would require folks to use their government assistance only for necessities like rent and food.
We hit the streets of Raleigh to get your opinion on the hot button issue.
“Any other way of using government assistance would be an abuse of the system,” David Richardson said.
"I think it's a good idea. I just think it would be hard to implement,” Jason Sheffield added. “How are you going to go about catching people doing that?”
The government assistance cards were not only being used in strip clubs and casinos, but also out of state too - places like Hawaii and on cruise ships.
We spoke with Kathy Osborne who has been a social worker for 40 years.
"If you get one or two people abusing the system we always have that," Osborne said.
She said she count on one hand how many times over she has seen people taking advantage of the system.
“They're always a very easy target, whenever times are tough. But it isn't the poor putting us in debt, it's the poor management,” she added. "I’d like to look at government spending and how we're using our money here rather then folks who are struggling"
Either way, the legislation, which is also part of the larger payroll tax bill, now moves to the Senate.
