The Jason Young re-trial resumed Monday morning in Wake County Superior Court in Raleigh after an explosive first week. NBC17.com is live blogging and live streaming the event.
4:56 p.m.: Mike Galloway of CCBI just testified that Jason Young had an injury to his "the bottom portion of his left big toe" when he was checked after the murder.
In a photo, Young's foot shows a bruised left toenail, and part of the nail is missing.
He also showed photos of Young that showed his shoe size.
It's an important point from the prosecution - the defense had insisted Young did not have any injuries or scratches when he was checked.
Galloway checked Young's entire body for injuries and also got hair and saliva samples.
4:36 p.m.: The prosecution has introduced a steady stream of evidence in the afternoon - pink blankets from Cassidy, pair of pink pajama pants, bottle of Tylenol, pillow with a shoe impression.
2:51 p.m.: More tough testimony after lunch. Mike Galloway of CCBI remains on the stand, with Becky Holt going through what happened.
Holt got Galloway to testify that some pillows on the ground had been moved. He had talked about the "transfer" of blood, which is when blood is smashed out of the body.
As Jason Young watched, and then looked down, Galloway testified how blood splattered from her to the bottom of the wall and door. At one point, though, the blood almost reached the ceiling.
Galloway detailed some of the footwear impressions that he found in the bedroom and also went over what was preserved from the room for evidence.
1:23 p.m.: The brutality of Michelle Young’s murder was on display Monday in dramatic testimony from agent Mike Galloway, a CCBI agent who documented what happened in the bedroom of the Young’s home in south Raleigh the night of Nov. 2, 2006.
The testimony had a clinical feel at times, with prosecutor Becky Holt showing photographs ...; “State’s Exhibit 1-75 … State’s Exhibit 1-76 …” and asking Galloway to describe what he had photographed that day on Nov. 3, 2006.
Michelle Young was found in her bedroom, just off the bed on the floor and in front of the Youngs’ two closets.
“We have a large amount of blood splatter going up the wall here,” he said as Jason Young, located only a few feet from the screen, looked up and then down throughout his testimony.
“You have Mrs. Young’s leg,” Galloway said to describe one photo in which part of her leg was in view.
“This is the head area of the bed. This is where you have the blood on the pillow, under the pillow, and on the fitted sheet,” he said of another.
“I am standing in front of the entertainment center,” he said.
“Inside his closet door. … You have a large volume of blood in this area,” he said.
And in another, he described an impact mark on the wall with blood in it.
Even for a seasoned detective, it was tough testimony, and Galloway’s face showed touches of pain as he looked at the photos in a quiet courtroom.
Asked if he had any “observations” about what he saw, he said, “I found her face to be horrific.”
There were lacerations across her face, and broken and missing teeth he found on the floor and under pillows.
Prosecutor Holt took him in front of the jury and held up photos of her face. Galloway recalled how he had held Michelle’s head so another detective could photograph it.
“You can see the split lip, the missing teeth,” he said, his voice trailing, as he stood in front of the jury. “And that’s about it.”
Judge Donald Stephens watched the jury intently as Galloway went through his testimony. When Galloway concluded just after 1 p.m., Stephens said it was time for a break, and the courtroom slowly, quietly filed out for lunch.
12:48 p.m.: Agent Mike Galloway is showing the jury photos from the bedroom now. He found Michelle Young face down, with her right arm under her body and her left arm out to the side.
"We have a large amount of blood splatter going up the wall here," he said.
12:22 p.m.: Agent Mike Galloway, in continung his testimony after the morning break, had some important observations about what he found in Cassidy’s bedroom.
He said he saw a bottle of adult Tylenol on her dresser, and a dropper nearby. He said the bottle was only about two-thirds full and the dropper had liquid in it that was the same color as the liquid in the bottle of Tylenol.
That’s an important point, because the prosecution is suggesting that Jason Young did something, or had something done, to drug Cassidy the night of the murder.
10:54 a.m.: Crime scene investigator Mike Galloway of City-County Bureau of Investigations just showed pictures of tire impressions the left of the Young's driveway. The prosecution has focused on these tire impressions, and Galloway said investigators took a mold of them.
Also, Galloway showed multiple pictures and video of the home. Asked by prosecutor Becky Holt if there was any indication of a forced entry, Galloway responded, “I found no signs of forced entry.”
Galloway just testified that he found blood on a foyer door leading to the garage. That was the only place downstairs where he found blood.
9:47 a.m.: Crime scene investigator Mike Galloway from CCBI took the stand and showed riveting video of the Young home from the day of the murder.
Galloway said he was dispatched to the scene at 1:56 p.m. and arrived at 2:32 p.m. He said he met with two other people when he arrived, and started photographing the scene.
He is now showing a video of the house from that day. What's eerie about the video is how suburban and normal the house appears.
There's a Halloween ghost on front porch, for example - the murder was only days after Halloween. The Youngs had a Lexus and a boat in their garage, and a fence around the back yard and a deck.
If you didn't know what had happened in that home that night, you'd think it looked like any normal home in suburban Raleigh.
He showed a sonogram on the refrigerator that had the baby inside Michelle, and Halloween candy from Cassidy on a counter in the kitchen.
Upstairs, you can see a white sock from 2-year-old Cassidy, and her bloody footprints in the hall on cream-colored carpet. In her bathroom, bloody marks were on the floor and the lower parts of the walls. The courtroom is quiet and still as Galloway shows the jury the video from the day of the murder.
The video then takes viewers into the master bedroom as the courtroom watched intently.
Jason Young rubbed his eyes as the investigator said, "This is Mrs. Young on the floor of the master bedroom. I found a baby doll here and small footwear impressions."
