East Carolina is looking to join a vast new conference for the 2013-14 academic year that will stretch all the way to Hawaii.
The Pirates, who have been looking for options beyond Conference USA, announced that 16 presidents and chancellors had met in Dallas Sunday to discuss a new league.
In addition to ECU, other members involved in the discussions included: Air Force, Alabama–Birmingham, Colorado State, Fresno State, Tulane, Hawaii, Marshall, Nevada-Reno, New Mexico, UNLV, Rice, Southern Mississippi, Texas–El Paso, Tulsa and Wyoming.
“The statement from the Chancellors’/Presidents’ (CEO’s) meeting is encouraging and indicative that the merger is moving forward as expected,” said ECU Athletic Director Terry Holland. “That is good news for all involved and we are looking forward to the continuing discussions.”
The new conference is expected to include 18 to 24 universities, plus a football playoff with semifinal matchups and a basketball tournament.
The league would play in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision – the highest level.
The announcement continues the dramatic shifts in collegiate sports, with megaconferences forming. Pitt and Syracuse are joining the ACC, with Missouri and Texas A&M to the SEC.
