The State Bureau of Investigation is looking into the death of a Raleigh man who died after being shot by a Wake County deputy.
Around 9:30 a.m. Saturday, the sheriff’s office says, deputies responded to a call at 5425 Live Oak Trail in Raleigh about a man threatening to commit suicide.
The 911 caller identified himself as the man's uncle and said "He needs some help, he's talking about death, killing himself, cutting his wrists, wants me to kill him."
The dispatcher tried to calm the situation even speaking to the nephew who was obviously distraught. He said he was an awful person, had a bad life, no job, and does not get to see his 2-year-old son. After a more than 10 minute call, a deputy arrived.
The man shot was identified as Adam Carter, 25, of Raleigh. He was taken to WakeMed where he died.
According to the sheriff's office, Carter confronted Deputy Tavares Thompson with a knife when Thompson arrived at the scene. That's when Deputy Thompson shot Carter twice in the chest.
Neighbor Brad Bliss was standing outside when the shots were fired.
"And that's when there were tons of cruisers, and guys running up the road with assault riffles," said Bliss.
The SBI is investigating. That's standard procedure when a deputy shoots someone.
Thompson has been with the office for almost five years. He has been placed on administrative duty.
