Ramses, UNC’s famed live mascot, was found dead Thursday, lying on his side in a field where he grazes.
Ann Leonard, Ramses’ owner, says the 8-year-old ram died peacefully, most likely of old age.
Being the 18th Ramses, Leonard says there is already a Ramses 19, who is about 2 years old. They call him “Bam Bam” because Leonard says “he’s a bit of a butter.”
The Hogan family has cared for the Tar Heel mascot since 1924. They’re kept on Hogan Magnolia View Farm, outside of Carrboro.
The Ramses rams are horned Dorset sheep, which are classified as a threatened species.
The long-time caretaker of Ramses, Rob Hogan, died last October from an illness related to a fall on his farm. Hogan was a fixture for years on the Kenan Stadium sidelines as the owner and handler of Carolina’s mascot.
Ramses 18 will be buried at the Hogan Farm.
