U.S. Rep. Mike McIntyre has decided to seek re-election to Congress this year instead of running for North Carolina governor.

The Lumberton Democrat had considered a gubernatorial bid in the two weeks since incumbent Beverly Perdue dropped out of the race, but McIntyre said Friday there wasn't enough time to assemble the type of campaign he wanted for the May 8 primary.

Three Democrats already are running - Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton, former U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge and state Rep. Bill Faison. Three more are looking at getting in to the race.

McIntyre is running for his 7th District seat although redistricting by the Legislature placed his home in the 8th District. Congressional candidates aren't required to live within the district to run for that district's seat.
