A 27-year-old woman says she was raped early Thursday morning in an alley, off Franklin Street in downtown Chapel Hill.

The victim, who is not a student at the university, says she was approached by two men in the alley behind Cosmic Cantina shortly after 2 a.m.

The victim told police she had gone outside to smoke and engaged in a conversation with the suspects before she was raped behind a dumpster.

An employee of Cosmic Cantina who was working the late shift says no one heard what was going on. It was also unclear who called for help, but police arrived a short time later.

Police say the victim was taken to a hospital, but did not suffer injuries other than the reported rape. A weapon was not reported to have been used.

The victim, who lives locally, has not been able to provide police with much of a description. Officers say she is too shook up from the crime.

Officers are hoping someone who saw something will contact them with information.

The alley where the incident allegedly happened sits on the border of campus and the city, and is only a few hundred feet from busy Franklin Street.

The incident happened only hours after the Duke/UNC basketball game.
