Helping small businesses find local vets

Hiring our Heroes

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Following Friday's "Hiring Our Heroes" event in Fayetteville, we had a small business owner asking what he could do to hire a veteran without spending lots of money on advertising.

Ken Sutherland said he spent hours on the Internet, looking for a veteran to hire for his small business, LifePlan Group in Zebulon. We wanted to find out, if there's an easier way.

The N.C. Department of Commerce Division of Employment has an office in Raleigh, where unemployed veterans like Jeremy Jastremski can go. Jastremski served two tours of duty in Afghanistan. He says soldiers have skills, that are useful in the civilian world.

"Leadership and discipline. Discipline to accomplish the mission, accomplish the job, what you've got to do, and to make sure that you're always doing the right thing at the right time," said Jastremski.

Leon Perry, manager of the Division of Employment, said his department tried to match a veteran's skills to a potential employer.

"We find veterans with the skill set that an employer's looking for," Perry explained. "We call them and we try to match them up with the employer."

Perry says small business owners can reach out to the Division of Workforce Solutions to find a vet for a position they may need to fill.

"Come on down to the office or call any office in the state - we're the Division of Workforce Solutions now," Perry said. "They can call the local office, and each office has a veterans specialist."

The commission has a free website for employers and job seekers.
