More than $3 million in contributions for Democrats running for Congress or governor may not be used for their intended purposes because of the shake-up in the North Carolina gubernatorial race.

Gov. Beverly Perdue's campaign had more than $2 million in the bank when she announced two weeks ago she wouldn't seek a second term. She had raised $4 million since 2009. A Perdue campaign committee spokesman said Wednesday he didn't know how the leftover money would be distributed.

Former U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge is now running for governor, but election laws prevent him from using nearly all of the $141,000 in his old federal campaign account.

Two other congressmen considering bids - Brad Miller and Mike McIntyre - have a combined $883,000 in their federal campaign coffers.
