She's not running for a second term but Gov. Bev Perdue says she will continue to pursue increasing the state sales tax. Perdue says the money will go toward education.
And because shopping could cost you a little bit more, we wanted to know what shoppers thought about Perdue's proposal.
“Sales taxes are kind of regressive, but I would rather (have) a consumption tax in some sense than an income tax,” said Jeff Smith of Cary.
Perdue wants to increase the sales tax by three quarters of a penny, saying the increase would cost the average household about $15 a month or about $180 a year.
“They want more money? Do more with what you got. We all have to,” said Ricardo Cobos of Garner.
Cobos is a father of four who said next year his youngest is going to private school.
“Whatever it is that we're doing in public schools is based on a model and a world that no longer exists,” Cobos added. “We need to be teaching our kids for the modern world with critical writing and thinking skills and they're simply not doing that.”
If the sales tax goes up, here are a few smart solutions financial experts say can save you some money.
- If you have a cell phone, consider getting rid of your landline.
- Start using your library card more.
- Shop out of season because you can save at least 5 percent.
However, Triangle residents we spoke with are still not pleased.
“It's not that we're spending too much money on the kids. The money is not getting to the kids and I don't think they need a whole bunch of money spent on them,” said Roy Lynch, a parent. “All they need are some books and a teacher.”
