Republicans now in charge of the North Carolina Legislature are benefiting from newly-earned political power in their campaign coffers, too.
GOP leaders of the Senate and House had a fundraising advantage over their Democratic counterparts at the close of 2011. Senate leader Phil Berger reported raising $502,000 in the past year. The Senate Republican Caucus said that amount was more than what all other 19 Democrats in the Senate raised individually.
In the House, Speaker Thom Tillis reported raising $361,000, compared to $145,000 by Minority Leader Joe Hackney.
Campaign finance analyst Jonathan Kappler said the margins reflect how campaign money flows to power, just as Democrats had a fundraising advantage for years.
Democrats said Tuesday the GOP advantage is skewed because several Republican incumbents have borrowed from their personal funds.
