Americans tired of the partisan gridlock in Washington can draft their choice for president online compliments of Americans Elect 2012.
"We the people can nominate a third choice for President," declares the nonprofit, non-partisan group's Web video.
"This is about opening the Democratic process up and allowing people to control it and not just the two parties that have dominated the process for so long," said Americans Elect Press Secretary Ileana Wachtel.
The group is half way home, collecting enough signatures to get on the ballot in 16 states. The goal is ballot access in all 50 states.
So how about North Carolina?
"Americans Elect, they are here in North Carolina and only about 4,000 signatures short of becoming a recognized party in North Carolina," said Don Wright, general counsel for the State Board of Elections.
Any registered voters can participate -- draft a candidate, current lawmaker, business leader, superstar or any citizen.
In May, successive rounds of online voting will reduce the field to six contenders. And then in June, the first ever national online convention.
So will this effort produce a third party spoiler?
"I don't see it as a spoiler," Wachtel said. "At this stage in the game, I think our country is in a crisis."
The group expects North Carolina elections officials will validate the 85,379 signatures needed to get on the ballot by the end of the month.
