The Town of Apex is preparing for a $2 million safety project that will realign Lufkin Road, but the company that takes on the project may not have a stellar safety record.
Construction to realign Lufkin Road at Ten Ten Road in Apex is set to begin sometime this year, but first the Town must accept bids from potential contractors.
Coming in with the lowest bid is Triangle Grading and Paving, which is $6,000 less than its closest competitor. However the Department of Labor has cited Triangle Grading and Paving for dozens more construction-related safety violations than the other companies.
Just last year, two employees of Triangle Grading and Paving died in a manhole in Durham. An investigation into the incident revealed there were unsafe oxygen levels in the hole – something that should have been tested before the men entered the manhole.
While a contractor has not been finalized for the Lufkin Road project, Apex Construction Management Direct Kent Jackson says the Town is following general statutes.
He says statutes requires the Town to choose the "lowest responsible bidder" and take into consideration factors such as "quality and performance."
Ultiamtelty, Jackson says significant safety violations could factor into the Town's decision.
Town officials hope to recommend a contractor to the Town Council in time for its Feb. 21 meeting.
