Army investigators are trying to account for 14,000 rounds of ammunition missing from Ft. Bragg.
Staff Sgt. Joshua Ford, spokesman for the 82nd Airborne Division, said the disappearance was discovered Wednesday.
He said the 1st Brigade Combat Team was put on lockdown for a few hours Wednesday night while a search was conducted.
Sgt. Ford said the Army Criminal Investigation Command is investigating.
"It's always a concern when any amount of ammunition goes unaccounted for," he said.
The search continues. Sgt. Ford said the rounds have to be accounted for.
The missing bullets, caliber .223 or 5.56 millimeter, are used in the Army's M-4 or M-16 rifles.
Sgt. Ford said the military is concerned about the safety of soldiers and civilians.
“I just can’t imagine how it could happen," said Polly Strickland, who visited the Veterans Park in Fayetteville Saturday night.
Others at the park, including LaVerne and Ray Harper, wondered the same thing.
“I think the military has a lot of security. It just seemed very surprising that that amount of material got stolen and they actually got away with it," LaVerne said.
They said they wondered why someone would take such a large amount.
“That’s a very good question. Why would they need so much unless you’re going to sell it and first of all, who’s the buyer?," Ray Harper said.
Susan Billman was disappointed to hear someone may have stolen from the base.
“I hate to see anything taken from Fort Bragg because truly they work hard," she said.
