On Saturday, Raleigh celebrates the grand reopening of Pullen Park.
Renovations of the 66-acre downtown park have been ongoing since January earlier this year.
The $6.3 million budget for the park’s renovations was approved as part of the 2003 Parks and Recreation Bond Referendum. Due to a delay in funding, design work began in 2006.
A project goal was to build a carousel house with the ability to provide a longer period of use throughout the year.
Park attendees will ride the restored carousel house and can expect improvements to the welcome center, concessions and the playground. Other improvements to the park include a new entrance, renovated event spaces, new restrooms and picnic shelters for park guests.
Inside, Lake Howell houses a new boat dock with a geothermal energy system. Shelter and carousel rentals are also now available to the public.
Pets with leashes are always welcome at the park.
Pullen Park is the fifth-oldest operating amusement park in the U.S. and the 16th oldest in the world.
