Mitch VanBruggen of Durham won The City of Oaks Marathon Sunday.
About 3,700 runners turned out for the fifth annual marathon and other races that began at the N.C. State Bell Tower.
VanBruggen, 26, is an exercise physiologist at Duke University Medical Center. He won $1,000 for placing first. He can across the finish line a 2:29:33, around four minutes ahead of the competition.
"It was a surreal moment, I had a smile on my face, normally when I finish my races I'm kind of grimaching in pain, so anxious to be done, but this race was just different," said VanBruggen.
For the women, Raleigh's Kimberlie Fowler, 31, took first place in a time of 2:55:22.
In addition to the marathon there was also a half-marathon, a 10K-run, a marathon relay and a mile run for kids.
The course was set to run from the bell tower through Umstead State Park and back to the bell tower.
