With seven billion people now living on the planet, the topics of land use, sustainable energy, and food production are becoming increasingly important.
Southern Energy Management and Piedmont Biofuels have teamed up with one possible solution addressing all three problems. It's called "Solar Double-Cropping," and is the first of its kind to use one space of land for two purposes.
The project just unveiled in Pittsboro is made of 288 solar panels placed nine feet up, allowing the ground beneath to remain useable. It is designed in a way that the shading will provide cover for shade crops, such as sweet potatoes, cabbages, and carrots that are just starting to pop-up now.
