Shaw students begin summer classes after April tornadoes

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Shaw University students returned to the classroom last week, nearly five weeks after a tornado swept through the campus.

Students began summer semester on Monday, May 23.

The University suspended the spring semester two weeks early because of the April 16 tornadoes. Every building on campus sustained at least minor damage.

About 400 students were cleared to begin classes, with another 200 awaiting clearance.  The 600 enrollment compares to the approximately 700 students who were registered for the 2010 summer semester.

Shaw said it would not open student housing for the summer semester, but Saint Augustine's College has offered housing to Shaw students. Buses will be shuttled to and from Saint Augustine's campus to Shaw University

Fall classes are scheduled to begin Aug. 17.
