Democratic Gov. Beverly Perdue and Republican legislative leaders say they've reached an agreement on a proposal that fills a funding gap for the health insurance plan for North Carolina state employees while keeping a free premium option for workers.
Perdue's office and Senate leader Phil Berger announced Wednesday the deal that could be on the governor's desk by the end of the week. It's designed to cover a $515 million shortfall over the next two years. The chief of staff to House Speaker Thom Tillis says House Republicans also support it.
Perdue vetoed a plan last month because she said it didn't take into account the needs of teachers.
The compromise gives plan leaders the option to use reserves to preserve the free coverage option for a year.
In a statement, Republican Sen. Tom Apodaca praised the State Employees Association of North Carolina for supporting the plan. "I commend SEANC for their tireless efforts on behalf of our state employees," Apodaca said.
