While Monday marks one month after deadly tornadoes tore through North Carolina, the cleanup is still very much in full swing for some victims
On hard-hit Serendipity Drive in Raleigh, blue tarps cover damage on many homes and only foundations remain on some pieces of land.
Jenene and Derald Roberts said that while they consider themselves lucky since they weren’t home when the storms hit, they are struggling to even begin their home repairs.
The couple said it took a few weeks for the insurance check to arrive, and when it did, they had to forward it to their mortgage company. They said now they’re just waiting for the money to be released by the bank.
“It is very frustrating,” Jenene Roberts said.
The couple said they had about $45,000 worth of damage to their home, although they are still able to live in it.
As they wait for the repair money to come through, they said the recent rains have dampened the situation even more. Their roof sustained between $10,000 and $15,000 in damage, they said.
“We didn’t have much water damage, but here this last week because of a couple of the storms, we’re starting to see water on the ceilings in some of the rooms,” Derald Roberts said.
But the couple said they have many reasons to be thankful, because their community came together, and many volunteers have stepped up to help. They also know the damage to their house could have been much worse. Two homes nearby were destroyed.
“We’re very thankful,” Jenene Roberts said.
