North Carolina politicians are reacting to President Obama’s Sunday night announcement about the death of Osama bin Laden.

Shortly after President Obama made the announcement, many North Carolnia politicians released statements on bin Laden's death.

U.S. Senator Richard Burr::

The death of Osama Bin Laden marks the culmination of the greatest manhunt ever undertaken by American forces.  This is a major development in our fight against terrorism and proves our resolve to hold accountable those who harm American citizens, but we must remain vigilant and not lose focus on the overall mission and our goal of eradicating terrorist threats.  There still remains a dire threat posed by Bin Laden's followers and the seeds of hate he planted across the globe, and while we are immensely grateful for this victory, our work is far from over.

U.S. Senator Kay R. Hagan, chair of the Senate Armed Services Emerging Threats Subcommittee:

"I join all Americans in praise for the Special Forces who finally brought down this mass murderer,” said Sen. Hagan.  “The long hunt for the terrorist behind the September 11 attacks, killer of nearly 3,000 Americans, is over. I hope this news can bring some peace to our 9/11 families who have waited almost 10 years for bin Laden's demise. It is a good night for America and the world."

Congressman Brad Miller:

"Our nation is united in the sense that justice has been done for the barbaric murder of 3000 innocent human beings a decade ago.

"I congratulate our military and our intelligence forces for their relentless and ultimately successful search. Al Qaeda remains a threat, but we have also seen demands for democratic reform in the Muslim world in recent months that give us hope. We have much work before us still."

Congresswoman Renee Ellmers

 "Nearly a decade ago on a beautiful September morning, our nation witnessed the worst in human terror as over 3,000 men, women, and children were murdered in cold blood. But that day also showed the greatness that is the American spirit and how our resolve will never falter. Last night we learned that at long last, justice has been served and Osama Bin Laden will never again harm another innocent victim of his violent ideology. As we celebrate this victory for freedom over terror, we must remain vigilant and never let down our guard, even as it has suffered a crushing defeat. The men and women of our armed forces, intelligence community, and their families have worked valiantly throughout this long battle and deserve our praise. I commend President Obama for bringing Bin Laden to justice and would like to thank former President Bush for his long standing commitment and resolve. I join all Americans in celebrating this day of victory over terrorism."

Congressman Larry Kissell (NC-08):n:

"This marks a great step in our war on terror. Those who threaten the life and freedom of American citizens, both here and across the globe, will be found and brought to justice. I want to thank the brave men and women of our armed services for never wavering in their mission to protect our nation and way of life. The families of those lost on 9/11 and all of the soldiers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice will forever remain in our prayers. God bless the United States of America."

Congressman Mike McIntyre stated:

"The death and demise of Osama Bin Laden is a tribute to the persistence and patience of our national security team and in particular our Special Operations Forces.  It is a tribute to those who lost their lives on 9/11, it is a commitment to our nation's pursuit of justice, it is a reminder to all those who seek to harm us that we will always be vigilant, and it is a signal of continued commitment to freedom around the world.  God bless our Armed Forces and intelligence community, and let us come together as a nation to honor their work and dedication."

Congressman G. K. Butterfield said:

“Nearly a decade after the shocking attacks of September 11, a measure of justice has finally been served. While America is certainly safer today, we still face the threat of Al-Qaeda and must remain alert and vigilant. I am deeply proud of the men and women in uniform responsible for planning and executing this victory, and thankful that no American lives were lost.”
