President Barack Obama will visit LED manufacturer Cree Inc. when he comes to Durham Monday, June 13.
The White House says the President with speak with workers at the Durham-based company, as well as tour the facility.
"We're honored to host President Obama at Cree,"Chuck Swoboda, chairman and CEO, Cree, said. "We look forward to showcasing our industry-leading, energy-efficient technologies and participating in discussions on policies that can spur economic growth and promote U.S. job creation."
Obama will also meet his Jobs and Competitiveness Council regarding "initiatives and policies to spur economic growth, promote job creation and accelerate hiring across the nation."
"The President will hear from a variety of leaders and continue the discussion focused on identifying practical ways the government and business can work together to foster growth and create jobs," the white House said. "The Council will also focus on the importance of educating and training America’s workforce with the skills and training they need to compete globally."
The Jobs Council, led by GE Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Immelt, held its first meeting at the White House on Feb. 24, focusing on finding new ways to promote growth, to encourage hiring, to educate and train workers to compete globally and attract jobs and businesses to the United States.
In 2010, the President awarded Cree more than $39 million to purchase new equipment to add capacity and capability to lower production costs of LED chips and fixtures.
The award was part of $2.3 billion in Recovery Act Advanced Energy Manufacturing Tax Credits for clean energy manufacturing projects across the United States.
"Building a robust clean energy sector is how we will create the jobs of the future," said President Obama in a written statement. "The Recovery Act awards ... help close the clean energy gap that has grown between America and other nations while creating good jobs, reducing our carbon emissions and increasing our energy security."
Vice President Joe Biden visited Cree in March 2010.
