A Durham man has been accused of killing his wife and then kidnapping their three children.
Officers responded to a stabbing call around 10:30 p.m. Sunday near the KFC/Taco Bell at 1820 S. Miami Boulevard. When they arrived, they found a woman suffering from multiple stab wounds.
The victim, 23-year-old Amanda Mangum of South Miami Boulevard, was transported to Duke University Hospital, where she later died.
A neighbor said she saw Mangum and her husband arguing in the yard earlier that night.
“He was just looking at her with a blank face, like he had no soul,” said Erica Solomon. “He was just straight, a blank stare.”
According to search warrants, Durham County deputies responded to the Mangum's home before the stabbing because a domestic disturbance call. Deputies say when they got to the South Miami Boulevard home, no one was there. They say they later found Amanda walking on Highway 70. She assured deputies her husband had not assaulted her, but that they had just gotten into an argument.
A couple hours later, Durham police found Amanda stabbed. Witnesses told police the couple's three kids were on scene when it happened.
911 Caller: "She is cut in her stomach, she is cut in her chin, she is cut in her arm."
Mangum’s children - Brianna Mcgruder-Mangum, 8; Devion Mcgruder-Mangum, 4; and Kenya Mcgruder-Mangum, 2- went missing Sunday night and were found unharmed Monday morning.
Amanda's husband, 29-year-old Kenya Domon Mangum, is accused of abducting the children.
Officers located Kenya Mangum and the three children in an apartment in the 4200 block of Thames Avenue Monday morning. Mangum was arrested and also charged with murder.
Solomon said the incident makes her feel a little unsafe.
“You never know what is going on behind close doors. It’s just really sad; I feel unsafe now. It was so close to home,” said Solomon.
Mangum is listed on the North Carolina sex offender registry for an out of state conviction.
Police in Maine said Mangum was charged with having sex with a 13-year-old female when he was 20-years-old. The victim in the case told investigators that she consented to having sex with Mangum. Because the girl was 13, Mangum was charged with gross sexual assault.
Waterville Police believed Mangum and another man, 19-year-old Anthony Adams, were associates and would drive to Maine from North Carolina together to meet up with the young girls.
Kenya Mangum also has a prior felony drug conviction. He will have his first appearance Tuesday at 10:30 a.m.
Police say the kids are now staying with family.
