School board members faced the public once again Wednesday night as they continued their series of meetings on the 2011-2012 student assignment plan.
The public meeting took place at Southeast Raleigh High school where the school board got an earful from the public about the subject.
But as NBC-17 found out, there's more on the public's collective minds than just frustration over the new student assignment plan when we interviewed parents before the public comment session.
“I have many concerns," said parent Chris Simes. “The biggest one right this minute is accreditation. I think it's incredible they'd even consider dropping accreditation.”
Parent Sasha Calden had a different worry.
“I'm more concerned with making sure the balance of education across the county is even and switching to home-based schools will cause more of a socioeconomic issue than anything else,” she said.
Some board members were taken to task by parent Erin Byrd who said, “Our school board is really challenged right now,” she contended. “Instead of encouraging unity … it's encouraging a lot of division.”
Regarding the national notoriety Wake County Schools have been receiving lately, parent Tony Jones said, “It's discouraging to see the bad press, but on the other hand it's very encouraging because now the pressure is on. The light is on them so they're more apt to do the right decision.”
Accreditation remains a top concern among many parents including Tony Jones.
“There have been many issues in the past few months, but I’m seriously concerned about losing accreditation for our school system,” he said.
