Hundreds of UNC students and faculty members are building Habitat for Humanity houses this weekend as part of the UNC Build a Block project.
The student-led initiative is aimed at building 10 Habitat for Humanity houses in 10 months for UNC hospital and UNC university employees.
The project was formed after Habitat for Humanity of Orange County approached the UNC student chapter with news that a record number of employees had applied for Habitat housing. It is considered the largest build that any university Habitat for Humanity group has attempted.
This weekend the 280 volunteers took part in a Blitz Build. The goal is to build two homes by 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
UNC Build a Block is competing against charities from NC State and Duke to win $20,000 from Kangaroo Express as part of its Battle for Bean Street competition.
