North Raleigh resident Lora Roa attended an unaccredited high school in rural South Carolina and said the lack of accreditation hurt her chances of getting in schools that recruited her.
She attended Clemson University rather than MIT, Bryn Mawr or CalTech.
"Unfortunately I heard from some institutions that my high school diploma did not count," said Roa.
Accreditation is voluntary and identifies schools that follow a set of educational standards.
Some universities and colleges use accreditation in determining student admission and financial aid.
Currently, all Wake County High Schools are accredited by both the state and a national group based out of Georgia called AdvancED.
Although Roa's children are in college now she said parents need to pay attention to any school board decisions surrounding accreditation.
Her story is posted here and NBC 17's Steve Sbraccia will update any board decisions on this issue late Wednesday night.
