The Wake County School Board agreed Tuesday to abolish the Student Assignment Committee, laying the task of creating a new assignment plan into the new Superintendent's hands.
During the Board's work session, Student Assignment Committee chair John Tedesco proposed to abolish the committee. Committee members will turn over the task of creating a student assignment plan to new Superintendent Tony Tata.
Board member John Tedesco recommends that Tata review the Wake Schools Choice assignment plan developed by education consultant, Michael Alves and then recommend suggestions to the board.
"This is great I can actually get to my own life again," said Tedesco. "We were waiting to have a leader in this district like superintendent Tata to help us with that."
There were no objections from the board members.
Tata said he plans to create a task force to look into the Wake Schools Choice plan, which was unveiled Friday. Tata hopes to have a plan created by the spring in order to get community input.
"We think we've got the possibility now with the Wake Schools Choice plan and it seems to be well received and so it could be a good foundation going forward," said Tata.
Wake County School Board members will be holding one last public hearing on student assignments for the 2011-2012 school year.
Earlier this month, the board added an additional 70 families to the reassignment changes. Those affected families will be able to voice their concerns at Tuesday night's meeting.
The Board is then expected to take its final vote following public comment.
