In the coming weeks, Wake County Schools is expected to see a vote on the school district's budget and the unveiling of new student assignment plans, according to Superintendent Tony Tata.
Tata said Friday that the goal of the budget is to protect teachers and the classroom.
However, House recommendations call for a $26 million cut in teaching assistants. Tata said in 2009-2010, the school district lost 25 percent of teaching assistants.
"We currently have 2,300 teaching assistants with a budget of $48 million. The cuts by House would eliminate an additional $26 million from our budget and we would still have to maintain our discretionary cut from 2009-10," said Tata.
The House budget proposal would call for an 8.8 percent cut in funding and it's still unclear what the Senate proposes.
Tata and school board members have been working for months on new student assignment plans and they are expected to be unveiled in the next few weeks, even though they are still at the concept level.
The school district is working on launching a website that will list the nine student assignment options and the give parents the opportunity to provide comments on the nine options.
"We will put all nine plans up there. We will put all 18 criteria that we have used to evaluate these plans, but we're still at the concept level," Tata said.
Tata adds that he plans on giving the board a recommendation about student assignment in June.
