As many as 3,000 students not slated for reassignment could now face a school shuffle next year.
During Tuesday afternoon's Student Assignment Committee meeting, three citizen advisory members laundry listed dozens of school node changes to get students in schools closer to home.
Many of the moves impact students in Southeast Raleigh.
Citizen members appointed by board members John Tedesco and Deborah Prickett recommended changes affecting students attending Garner and Leesville community schools.
Both David Williams and Tracey Noble say their recommendations are in line with new board policy that suggests proximity as a key factor in assigning students to schools near their homes.
Citizen advisory member Anne Sherron objected to the additional recommendations and says people are expecting a minimal amount of changes, not additional moves, in the third and final year of this multi-year student assignment plan.
Most of the expected reassignments are to fill the brand new Walnut Creek Elementary school in southeast Raleigh.
However, today's additional moves involve reassigning students in East Garner Middle, North Garner Middle and Garner High Schools as well as Leesville Elementary, Middle and High schools closer to their homes in Raleigh and Souteast Raleigh.
The full board will begin considering these recommendations Dec. 7 and then host a board work session Dec. 14. Concerned parents can voice their concerns during community engagement meetings in January.
