Brian Pipa is a software engineer for Cisco Systems by trade and candy enthusiast by choice. He put the two together in a computer blog about the sweet stuff and says he could have never predicted what happened next.
"She said, 'hey can you come up to New York to film the "Big Idea with Donny Deutsch?" Pipa said.
After three years of blogging on www.candyaddict.com, Pipa got a call from the big apple to be a candy expert on the national show. Now, his site gets over 5,000 hits per day and he's rubbing elbows with candy's finest.
"All the big candy companies know who I am and about the site. I even had a meeting with people from Wonka, Nestle, Mars and Hershey," Pipa said.
Pipa's daughter said there are perks to the candy business. They have over 100 pounds of candy in their dinning room.
"My dad, he lets me try all the different types of candy," Madison Pipa said.
Pipa said he never intended for his site to get this much attention but admits blogging is an effective way to share ideas with people from all over the country.
"Blogs have grown by leaps and bounds. There are blogs that are now respected. The person who started them, like me, was just someone who had a passion for something. They started writing about it and then they become an authority figure," Pipa said.
Now, Pipa said he has teamed up with eight other writers who will help him continue to share his passion for candy. In the long run, he says if people continue viewing the site, anything could happen.
"I'd love to be hired by one of the candy makers, someone they look to for ideas," Pipa said.
Pipa also admits he secretly loves to be the first to try a new type of candy before anyone else.
