Joe Thompson, a nationally renowned old-time fiddler and folk musician who lived in Mebane, has died. He was 93.
Tracey Alston of Sharpe Funeral Home in Burlington says Thompson died Monday after suffering a gradual decline in health.
The Times-News of Burlington reports that Thompson was born in 1918 and was taught by his father how to play the fiddle.
During his life, he mastered a style of African-American country fiddling that has largely disappeared. In 2007, he won a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Larry Vellani, a fellow musician, was at Thompson's bedside when he died. Vellani says the musician was surrounded by members of his family, and that his death was peaceful.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been finalized.
